To what extent do emotions affect our decisions?

As we all feel emotions, we can ask ourselves if these can affect our decisions.

Emotion is defined as `a strong feeling such as love or anger, or strong feelings in general´. the main ones are:

In every moment we are feeling one or more than one emotion, even if we think that we are not feeling something we are, maybe it isn´t one of the main ones. But we are constantly feeling.

The main question here is if these affect by the time we have to make a decision. We tend to think that it has nothing to deal with it. But it has. Also emotions inform in a faster way your brain

When you are sad, angry or worried about something you tend to say that `we can´t think clearly´ meaning that when you make a decision in this emotional state, it´s harder for you to make it as you are thinking in something else.

But also when you are happy or positive, we tend to make decisions faster and without thinking the posible consequences.

I think that emotions affect our decisions. I don´t think that is something negative, but I´d say that to be effective we should kind of control them. I mean that by the time we have to make a decision we shouldn´t let our emotions to drive us to make a decision, as we need to think the consequences and not guide us by our emotional impulses.

But emotion also has an important role in this, as they make us be subjective.

In conclusion, emotionds have an important role in making decisions but this doesn´t mean that we should let emotions make the decision for us.

What role does imagination and emotions play in modern art graffitis?

According to a dictionary, a graffiti is a writting or drawing sprayed on a wall or anyother public surface. Let’s start with some basics.

Firstly, emotion. How does it interfere? Joy, anger, sadness… All these feelings are part of the image created. The author captures all these emotions in a single drawing that describes them all. Depending on what he wants to express, something will come to his mind, which will later be represented on the wall.

Imagination is crucial. It is the main component of the process, the feelings are processed unconciounsly and the drawing, that will be painted, is created as an idea. Without imagination, we wouldn’t be able to creaste art. New original figures are created not because they have been percepted but because they are imagines.

In conclusion, art needs from imagination and emotions to be developed.

How can we judge which is the most important WOK?

There are eight ways of knowing which are language, reason, sense perception, imagination, intuition, faith, emotion and memory. All of them are considered to take part in the process of gaining kwoledge but, there must be some which are more important than others. Lets analyse the one by one!

Language for example is a WoK because the rest are explained through language; therefore language is an essencial one.

Reason is the power of the mind to think, understand, and form judgements logically. Some people believe reason is the most important WoK because all the other are dependent on reason and in some way this is true; however, reason also depends on other WoK as for examle the one mencioned before because reason has to be explained through language.

Sense perception in my point of view is a WoK which is not as important as others. For instance, with sense perception you know you shouln´t touch fire because your hand will burn but you could use a differnet type of WoK to know this as for example reason.

Imagination could be one of the most important ones as well as knowledge and imagination are interralted. Sometimes when we look at things from a logical perdpective we can miss out some important points. One such example is when you look at a piece of art, if you are trying to use reason to understant what the author is trying to transmit you may not understand the piece; on the contrary, if you use your imagination the piece can make much more sense.

Intuition is not an essencial WoK as it cannot be proved.  You may intuit it is going to rain because the clouds are gray but you are not sure about it and reason can sometimes do the job for intuition.

Faith is again not a basic WoK as intuition because it cannot be proved. It is true that in some subjects as science where you can´t prove everything as we don´t have the ways, faith can be very important. Nevertheless,  for one more time, faith depends on reason.

I don´t think emotion is an important one either because it can work on its own and no other way of knowing depends on emotion; however, emotion can sometimes be dependant on other WoK.

Memory can be important or not. On the one hand, if you are a little child you don´t need to rember many things as you haven´t lived for long yet; on the other hand, elder people have a huge amount of knowledge accumulated in their memory as they have lived for a long time, therefore, memory can be a clear way of knowing for them.

In conclusion, it is true as I believe that there are some WoK which are more important than others which include language, reason, imagination and in some cases memory. Nevertheless, this doesn´t mean the other four are not ways of knowing but less important ones.

To what extent are advertisements beneficial to society ?

This week in economics we´ve seen the effect of advertisements on the demand curve, and we saw that definitely, it has an effect either beneficial or misleading in terms of the company´s benefit.

But promotional campaigns also have an effect on the society and here´s the question, is the impact of these advertisements beneficial or not?

` Advertisement´ is defined as `a picture, sign, etc. that is used to make a product or service known and persuade people to buy it´.

It can be profitable for both consumers and sellers. As the seller can popularize his products and the consumer can get to know better the product through the information given in the advertisement.

But on the other hand, advertising may affect us, as much of the ads state prototypes and make us feel hung-up. Also with all this new technology, social media etc. We have less privacy, and this goes in favor to the publicists as they would know more about us. They will know how to catch us  to buy their product.

I think that in ads are beneficial for the company as they get a benefit from it. But in most cases, ads are not beneficial for society as they are sexists, racists, and they make us be hung-up with the way we are, the way we dress, the way we are, the way we talk… Everything. With some ads we are being categorized, for example,if you are … you have to buy this or that.

Because of this,I think that ads should be more controlled, I´m not saying that all the ads are being bad used but, as many of them are unsuitable or not used in a beneficial way for society. There should be more control.

Another reason is that the product in the ad it isn´t the same in reality, so when this happens most people may feel disappointed, as they´ve lied to you.

In conclusion, I think that in the last years´ ads are not being beneficial to society, only to the companies that get a benefit from them. And there should be more control, as they don´t always say the truth, and they are in many cases inappropriate.

This is a great example that shows that advertisements are sometimes exaggerated by the time they have to describe or illustrate the product.

Are Advertisements Beneficial or not?

What proof can be used to justify knowledge?

According to Plato, knowledge is “a justified, true belief”. But how can one justify knowledge? The answer is obvious: proof. However, this is where the problem begins: what can we deem as proof?

The truth is, the only real proof is the one that we choose to believe. After all, there is no knowledge without belief, since knowledge is, by definition, a belief. Proof is the same.

For example, there are those who say that science is really a religion, since it is a way of seeing the world: instead of it being created by a God, it was created by a massive explosion. Some argue that science is different, since it can be proven, but can it really? The only way to “prove” scientific beliefs is with artifacts created by humans, which have failed in more than one occasion. Not to mention the many ridiculous theories and “proven” facts that science has provided throughout History, such as the Earth being flat or women being thought to release atoms from their eyes. In the end, science and religion alike are just attempts at understanding a world that we cannot comprehend. We are just too stubborn and stuck in our own ego to accept it.

But let’s say that science is proven. So is religion. Jesus proved that he had been sent by God when he walked on water, or when he cured countless people, and yet many choose not to believe it. One could argue that the only source that could confirm this information is the Bible, which is not reliable. But if the Bible is not reliable, then how can any other historical text be trusted? What makes, say, the Declaration of Independence acceptable as proof, and not the Bible?

Even language is something we choose to believe. The only thing that makes a duck “a duck” and not “a bear” is that we choose to call it a duck.

This world is so complex that not even our best attempts at explaining it can be proven right or wrong. In the end, the only proof that can justify knowledge is the one that each individual chooses to believe.

Can you actually stop learning things?

Learning is gaining knowledge, so we could say that we are learning new things everyday, either by having someone teaching you, by reading a book, by having experiences…

Everytime we look at something, we gain information: how it looks like, what color it is, how big it is and so on. We learn about that thing and therefore we gain knowledge. Everytime we hear a sound or taste some food, we are learning. This can be applied to everything we do, and in order to do this, we use our senses of perception.

So if everything we do in our daily life makes us learn, is it possible to stop learning? Well, maybe if there was a blind and deaf person, who can’t smell nor taste, and isn’t able to feel tactile stimulus… But that’s something very unlikely.

There’s no way to stop. Even if you know everything and anything, you will still be gaining knowledge. Your imagination will start making up new knowledge based on what you already know, your daily experiences will change from time to time as we live in such a complex society/world, your body will also change through time and you will notice it…

It seems that only death can stop our learning process. However, this might not even be true, because there are those that are faithful and believe in life after the death.

To what extent can memory be a reliable WoK?

Memory is the capacity one has to store and retrieve information. But memory is not a primary WoK, it is accessed in the future, after all the other WoK have given us knowledge, and we use memory to recall, modify or enchance said knowledge.

And so i ask myself, is memory a reliable WoK? After all, emotion can heavily influence one’s memory of a moment. If you have two people recalling an incident that happened, and the two parties were involved in opposite sides, you will have two very distinct pieces of knowledge, which are supposedly from the same event.

Emotion isn’t the only thing that affects memory though, memory decay, misinformation, misattribution and memory “patching” are other factors that may affect the accuracy of memory. Misinformation and misattribution are similiar in the way that they both modify memory based on external influences. Constant questioning over an event, or the telling of stories from early childhood, especially from the times in which long term memory hadn’t developed yet, can deeply modify memory, in the first case causing someone to remember something that didn’t happen, and in the second one making the person create memories assuming how they would have went.

Memory decay and memory patching are also closely related. Memory decays after some time, becoming innacurate. Then memory patching steps in, where memory is “fuzzy”, the mind recreates the events and places them in the memory, based solely on what the mind assumes had happened.

For these reasons i hold memory to be a heavily unreliable WoK, and should not be taken as the sole source of knowledge in any case.

To what extent are loyal to our feelings and believings?

Everyone thinks that we are always going to follow our values and never going to give up on them. But the truth is that nowadays in society there are many factors that are able to change easily and radically our way of seeing the world.

A long time ago there was no freedom expression and humanity in general suffered a lot as it was not possible to say their thoughts out loud without consequences.

Currently it is assumed that we have overcome this.  Unfortunately we have not realised yet that we are becoming slaves of for example trends. Nowadays we are every time more easily influenced and someone with the appropiate tools can make you change your mind.

Everybody likes to say and show off of having their ideas clear. But the truth is that if we did a social experiment, I am pretty sure that only a few people would still continue with the same ideas.

With this I mean that we are currently exposed to a world where we are continually influenced whether in a good way or bad way.

Therefore we must always think logically and never give up on ourselves.

To what extend can emotion change people?

While I was watching the film of Othello in my language class a questoin came to my mind: to what extend can emotion change people?

Othello is a tragedy about the life of a  moorish called Othello. He marries Desdemona and is tricked by his servant Yago.
Yago manipulates Othello with his emotions. He convinces him that Desdemona, his wife, is seeing another man (Cassio). In the film there is not proof of this. But Yago is allways making up things to make him believe it.
In the end Othello kills his wife Desdemona who has never tricked him and has allways loved him. And only because Yago has made him feel jealous and ashamed.

In the film we can clearly see that emotion can change people. It makes Othello change from loving Desdemona to killing her and all bacause of his own emotions in a really short period of time.

I really think that emotion has an important job on the role of changing people. There is nothing such as jealousy or love or hate. This emotions can change us completly and only in a few seconds. They can make us change the way we behave with others and even the way we live.

How can experience influence in our knowledge?

In our religion class we had to watch a film called Bruce Almighty. This film made me think about the way of gaining knowledge through experience.

In the film, Bruce is not the biggest follower of God. He critizes the role of God and is angry because he thinks life is not fair to him and God doesn´t help him.
One day God gives Bruce his role for him to experience what it is like to be him and all the responsabilities he has.
During the movie, Bruce learns that God has a lot of prayers from all the world and he has to select a few because not everyone can have what they want. If everyone gets what they wish the world could be caothic as we can see in a part of the film.

This knowledge is gained by the main actor through the experience of being God. After having  lived a few days like God he becomes aware of how lucky he is for having the life he has and he realizes that God doesn´t give us allways what we want because he has better things for us and because he can´t give everyone what they wish for.

So in my opinion I think we can gain a lot of different type of knowledge through experience. Because we learn a lot about other people and about the world if we experience what they experience.
